Carpentry

Whether it’s a new extension, loft conversion, or full home renovation, we deliver timber work that feels solid, seamless, and beautifully made.

Carpentry & Joinery in Milton Keynes & Buckinghamshire

Good carpentry is one of the details that determines whether a home feels properly finished or just complete. It’s in the way a door closes, the way a staircase feels underfoot, the way a built-in unit sits flush against a wall that isn’t quite square.

We carry carpentry and joinery skills in-house across first fix, second fix, and bespoke joinery work. The same standard applies whether we’re hanging doors on a full renovation or building a one-off alcove unit for a single room.

Carpentry Services We Carry Out

First Fix Carpentry

Structural timber work carried out before plastering begins. Stud walls, floor joists, roof timbers, window and door frames, and any timber elements that form part of the building’s structure. First fix sets the standard for everything that follows, and we treat it accordingly.

Second Fix Carpentry

The work that finishes a room. Doors, frames, skirting boards, architrave, window boards, and staircase components are all fitted after plastering is complete. This is the stage most visible to the homeowner, and the stage where attention to detail matters most.

Staircases

Staircase installation and replacement requires precision at every stage. String alignment, tread and riser fitting, balustrade installation, and newel post positioning all need to be right for the staircase to feel solid and look considered. We work with both supplied staircases and bespoke joinery solutions depending on the brief.

Doors and Frames

A door that doesn’t hang correctly, or a frame that isn’t plumb, is something you notice every time you use it. We hang doors properly, including period and solid timber doors that require more care than a standard hollow core. Where frames need to be made or modified to suit an unusual opening, we handle that in-house.

Skirting and Architrave

Profiles, junctions, and how mitre cuts are handled at corners and changes in plane all affect the finished result. Where existing skirting or architrave needs to be matched, we work from the original profile or source the closest available match from specialist suppliers.

Built-in Storage

Fitted storage built properly to suit the space it occupies. Alcove units, under-stair storage, bedroom wardrobes, and utility room joinery designed around your specific requirements rather than adapted from a standard unit range.

Bespoke Joinery

Off-the-shelf storage rarely fits a room as well as it looks in a showroom. Walls aren’t always square, alcoves aren’t always symmetrical, and ceiling heights don’t always match standard unit dimensions.

Bespoke joinery is built to the actual dimensions of your space. That means flush reveals, consistent gaps, and storage that makes proper use of every centimetre available. It also means the design reflects how you use the space, not what happens to be available in a catalogue.

We design and build bespoke joinery for alcove units, fitted wardrobes, home office furniture, media units, window seats with storage, and utility room cabinetry. Each piece is designed in conversation with you, built in our workshop, and fitted on site.

Materials and Finishes

Solid Timber

For staircases, period-appropriate joinery, and bespoke pieces where longevity and character matter, solid timber is the right choice.

Oak, ash, pine, and tulipwood are the most commonly specified depending on the application and the finish required.

Solid timber moves with changes in humidity, which affects how it’s detailed and fixed. We account for this at the design stage.

MDF and Moisture-Resistant Board

For painted joinery, built-in storage, and contemporary fitted furniture, moisture-resistant MDF offers a stable substrate that holds paint well and doesn’t move.

It’s the right material for the right application, and we’ll be straightforward about where it makes sense and where it doesn’t.

Finishes

Painted finishes, stained and oiled timber, lacquered joinery, and wrapped or veneered panels are all options depending on the material and the aesthetic.

Where joinery needs to match existing woodwork in a property, we work from a sample or a paint reference to get as close as possible before anything is fitted.

Precision and Finish Standards

Carpentry is one of those trades where the difference between adequate and excellent is visible every day. A skirting board that pulls away from the wall, a built-in unit with an inconsistent reveal, or a staircase balustrade that moves when you hold it are all signs of work done to a minimum standard.

We work to a standard we’d be comfortable with in our own homes. Joints are tight, fixings are concealed where they should be, and every piece is checked before we move on. Where a wall or floor isn’t level, we compensate at the fitting stage rather than hoping nobody notices.

On renovation and extension projects, our carpenters work alongside the wider build team from first fix through to final snag. The same people who built the stud walls are responsible for the second fix finish, which means nothing gets passed over and nobody points the finger elsewhere if something isn’t right.

Carpentry FAQs

Do you build custom storage?2026-03-24T14:06:37+00:00

Yes. Bespoke built-in storage is one of the most common standalone carpentry commissions we take on. We design around the specific dimensions of your space, agree the brief and materials with you before anything is built, and fit on site to a finish that looks like it was always part of the room.

Can you match existing woodwork?2026-03-24T14:06:57+00:00

In most cases, yes. Matching skirting profiles, architrave details, and staircase components requires finding the right timber profile and finish. Where an exact match isn’t available from standard suppliers, we can have profiles machined to match. We’ll assess what you have and advise on the closest achievable match before work begins.

Can you match existing skirting or architrave? We source or machine timber profiles to closely match original woodwork.

What finishes do you offer?2026-03-24T14:07:17+00:00

Painted, stained, oiled, lacquered, and veneered finishes are all options depending on the material and application. For painted joinery, we use a primed and painted finish that holds well over time. For solid timber, we’ll recommend the finish that suits the species and the use. Where you have a specific finish in mind, we’ll advise on whether it’s suitable for the material and application before committing to it.

Do you work on period properties?2026-03-24T14:07:34+00:00

Yes. Period properties often require sympathetic joinery that respects the original character of the building. We work with traditional profiles, appropriate timber species, and fixing methods that suit older properties. Where original joinery needs to be repaired rather than replaced, we’ll always advise repair first if it’s the right outcome for the property.

Can you supply and fit, or fit only?2026-03-24T14:07:52+00:00

Both. We can supply timber, sheet materials, and ironmongery as part of the project, or we can work with materials and components you have sourced yourself. If you’re supplying your own materials, we’ll want to review the specification before confirming the programme.
