Brickwork & Masonry in Milton Keynes & Buckinghamshire

Good brickwork is one of those things most people only notice when it’s wrong. The pointing that doesn’t match, the repair that stands out, the garden wall that looks like it was built by a different hand to the house it sits beside.

We carry brickwork and masonry skills in-house. That matters because most general builders subcontract this work to whoever is available. When it’s done by people who do it every day, the difference shows.

Talk to Us About Your Project

What We Do

  • Structural Brickwork: New builds, extensions, and structural walls built to current building regulations. Properly bonded, correctly specified, and inspected at each relevant stage. The structural integrity of a building starts with the masonry, and we treat it accordingly.
  • Decorative Brickwork: Corbelling, soldier courses, arched openings, decorative panels, and feature brickwork that complements the character of a property rather than sitting at odds with it. This is skilled work that requires both technical knowledge and an eye for detail.

  • Repointing: Repointing done incorrectly causes more damage than it prevents. Using the wrong mortar on an older property traps moisture, accelerates decay, and can cause serious structural problems over time. We assess the existing mortar before specifying a replacement mix, and we match the profile and finish to what was there originally wherever possible.

  • Garden Walls and Boundary Structures: A well-built garden wall is a long-term investment. We build in brick, block, and stone, with appropriate foundations for the height and exposure of the structure. A wall without adequate foundations will move. We build them to last.

  • Chimneys: Chimney stacks take significant exposure and deteriorate over time. We carry out chimney repairs, rebuilds, and repointing at height using appropriate access equipment. Where a chimney is no longer in use, we advise on capping and waterproofing to prevent water ingress into the property below.

  • Stone Masonry: Natural stone work including dry stone walls, stone-faced garden structures, and stone repairs to period properties. Where an existing stone property needs repair or extension work, we source sympathetic materials and work in a way that respects the original construction.

Technical Standards

Mortar Specification

Mortar mix matters more than most people realise. Modern cement-heavy mortars are too rigid and too impermeable for older brick and stone properties. They crack, they trap moisture, and they transfer stress into the masonry rather than absorbing it. For buildings constructed before the 1920s, a lime-based mortar is almost always the right choice. We specify mortar based on what the building needs, not what is quickest to use.

Matching Existing Brick

Getting a close brick match requires knowing where to look. We work with reclamation yards, specialist brick manufacturers, and regional suppliers to find bricks that match the colour, texture, and dimensions of the existing property. An exact match isn’t always possible, but a sympathetic one almost always is. We’ll show you options before anything is ordered.

Structural Integrity

Brickwork that looks fine on the surface can have issues behind it. Failed wall ties, deteriorated cavity insulation, movement cracks that indicate a deeper problem. We assess before we quote, and we’re straightforward about what we find.

Heritage Considerations

Older properties, listed buildings, and properties in conservation areas require a more considered approach. The materials need to be appropriate, the methods need to respect the original construction, and in some cases consent is required before work begins. We understand these requirements and work within them.

Repair or Rebuild: How to Tell the Difference

This is a question worth answering honestly because the cost difference is significant and not every contractor will give you a straight answer.

Repair is appropriate when the underlying structure is sound, the damage is localised, and the cause of the problem has been identified and addressed. Repointing a wall that has sound brickwork but failed mortar joints is a repair job. So is replacing a small section of damaged brickwork above a lintel once the lintel itself has been fixed.

Rebuild is necessary when the structure has moved significantly, the brickwork has deteriorated beyond the point where repair is cost-effective, or the original construction was inadequate for its purpose. A garden wall that is leaning because it has no proper foundation is cheaper to rebuild correctly than to prop up repeatedly.

The honest answer is that some contractors will recommend a rebuild when a repair would do, and some will patch over problems that need a proper fix. We’ll tell you which category your project falls into and why, and we’ll show you what we’ve found before recommending a course of action.

Why Choose Us For Your Brickwork & Masonry

Most builders subcontract brickwork. We don’t. Our masons work for us, on your project, every day until it’s finished. That’s why the pointing matches, the bond is consistent, and the finished wall looks like it belongs to the property it sits beside.

  • In-house bricklayers and masons, not subcontractors sourced when a job comes in
  • Mortar specified to suit your building, lime-based where the property demands it
  • Brick sourced to match your existing property before a single course is laid
  • Heritage and conservation work carried out with appropriate materials and methods
  • Every stage checked against our quality standards before work moves forward

Brickwork & Masonry FAQs

How long does repointing last?2026-02-23T19:10:56+00:00

Done correctly with the right mortar for the substrate, repointing should last 20 to 30 years or more. Done incorrectly, or with the wrong mortar, it can fail within a few years and cause damage to the surrounding brickwork in the process. The quality of preparation and the mortar specification matter as much as the application itself.

Can you match my existing brick?2026-02-23T19:11:12+00:00

In most cases we can get close. Exact matches are harder on older properties where the original bricks were handmade or sourced from local yards that no longer exist. We’ll assess your existing brickwork, identify the likely source or specification, and present you with the closest available options before work starts.

What causes cracking in brickwork?2026-02-23T19:11:27+00:00

There are several causes and they point to different underlying problems. Hairline cracks in mortar joints are usually the result of normal thermal movement and are generally cosmetic. Stepped cracks following the mortar joints can indicate foundation movement or settlement. Horizontal cracks, particularly in older cavity walls, can indicate failed wall ties. Cracks that are widening over time need investigating before any repair work is carried out. If you have cracks you’re unsure about, we’ll take a look and give you an honest assessment.

Can you work on listed buildings?2026-02-23T19:15:50+00:00

Yes. Listed building consent is required for most external masonry work on a listed building, and the materials and methods need to meet the requirements of the local conservation officer. We understand these requirements and have experience working within them.

Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?2026-02-23T19:17:06+00:00

Not usually, but there are exceptions. A wall adjoining a highway that exceeds 1 metre in height, or any wall exceeding 2 metres, may require planning permission. Properties in conservation areas or with permitted development restrictions may have lower thresholds. We’ll advise you on what applies before work begins.
